It can be a pain and it can keep you up all night when your cat is scratching at a door, namely the back door to the garden. It can be downright infuriating, especially if you have fallen asleep a couple of times.
Obviously, the usual implements spring to mind, soft toys, scratching posts, scratching pad but maybe you are shutting him in one room? How about fitting a cat flap, they wont break the bank. There is usually a good reason for him doing this. with a little investigation the answer will present itself. Have faith and patience.

Still the best Cat scratching item available
That right, forget almost everything else on the market. The best thing you can by your cat to redirect its claws away from your furniture is......?
Cat Scratching posts, they come in all shapes and sizes, are inexpensive, wont take up too much space, are hard wearing and will provide a positive way for your cat to stretch its paws without stretching the fabric of your new couch.
Placing the cat scratching post near the piece of furniture it usually takes its aggression out on and then slowly moving it away can be a good way to form a new habit for your cat. As with everything, perseverance is the key.

Questions and Answers about cat behaviour - declawing need not apply
Cats are independent creature, far more so than dogs will ever be. Their inherent nature deems them to be solitary creature. Where as dogs are people creatures and seem happiest among humans.
A cat will scratch things as part of its exercise, in order to sharpen its claws and stretch its tendons and ligaments. It will not stop scratching anymore than a dog will not stop sniffing every single thing on the floor in front of it.
If a cat is scratching your house to pieces, a scratching post approximately a couple of feet high, various soft toys, and maybe a fixed piece of old carpet. These will allow it to get its fill. Never under any circumstances should you consider declawing your cat. It is a very inhumane procedure, removing part of the cats foot. This would be the same as having part of each finger removed up to the first knuckle. Some countries have actually banned this practice all together yet it still goes on.
Make sure you cat can have the run of the garden anytime it wants. Cats love to be outside, exploring their territory. This is all part of their nature, why try to make them out to be otherwise.

Benefits Of A Cat Scratching Post
Firstly, what is a cat scratching post?
It looks something like this:
Why should you be interested in reaping the benefits of a cat scratching post? Simply because, it may just be the best way to stop your pet cat from ripping the the of your house to shreds, think of them as a cats exercise, relaxation, therapy, and grooming kit all rolled into one.
What better way could there possibly be for your cat to unwind at the end of a tiresome day spent lounging in the sun while you and I are out working. Wouldn't it be a lot better, knowing you have one of those numbers planted somewhere in the house taking care of all your cats stresses, should it so need to take them out on someone or something?
