Before you jump up and down with joy, let me finish. You can keep your cat from scratching the furniture. Firstly though, you must remind yourself once more that cats will always scratch something. It doesn't have to be your three piece though.
What you can do though is provide him or her with the appropriate equipment to lets its natural instincts out on. Namely a scratching post or some old toys doused in cat nip.
Don't scold your cat for scratching the place up, they don't respond in the same way dogs do, it'll probably piss it off. Just steer it in the right direction.
